New winterm.eecs Windows login server

We are happy to announce the new version of winterm.eecs, our Windows Remote Desktop server. On Wednesday morning, June12, during the Windows patch cycle, we will update IP addresses to put the new server in place.

The new winterm.eecs runs Windows Server 2016, so it has the look and feel of a Windows 10 device. All of the usual software has been installed for you — if you notice something missing that you’ve been relying on, feel free to let us know at help@eecs. We have copied local profile data from the old winterm.eecs to the new one, to ease your transition.

The old winterm.eecs will remain available as “winterm-old.eecs.berkeley.edu” until the end of June.

June 2019 Windows Server Patching

PRINT, WINTERM and WDS will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, June 12th, at 3:00 am.

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, June 11th, 2019.

WINTERM may be unavailable till 10:00 am Wednesday, June 12th, depending on additional software updates.

NetApp fileserver maintenance – Phase II: Wed, June 19, 12-2pm

As part of our NetApp fileserver refresh cycle, we have a NetApp technician scheduled to be on site June 19, to assist with installation of the new hardware, and transfer of storage racks from the old NetApp system to the new one. Work is planned to take place between noon and 2pm.

Our expectation is that this work will not be disruptive to existing fileservice, but it involves a good amount of work around the existing hardware, so there is potential for unexpected problems.

NetApp fileserver downtime in preparation for upgrade – Phase I: Monday, June 10, 6-8pm

NetApp filers are due for their 4 year refresh cycle. Work on this has commenced, with new NetApp hardware on site. New filers are going to be added and data migration will occur some weeks down the road. While most of the work will be non-disruptive, some elements will be disruptive.

The first of this will happen on 10th June Monday, and the scheduled downtime will be from 6-8pm, to incorporate some network changes. All NFS and CIFS access to the filer (home and project storage) will be down during that time.

Mailing List Server maintenance, Wednesday, June 5, 5pm-7pm (rescheduled)

The EECS mailing list server lists.eecs.berkeley.edu will be down for maintenance beginning Wednesday, June 5th at 5pm. The Sympa mailing list software will be upgraded to resolve an issue that has been affecting some lists. (This bug causes updates to list owners or moderators to not take effect until the server is restarted.

The upgrade should take less than 1 hour, but we are allocating 2 hours in case of any problems that might occur. During this window, no messages will be accepted or distributed by lists.eecs.berkeley.edu. Incoming messages will be deferred until the server is back up; no messages should be lost.
