Various Linux servers (login, dhcp, DNS, SMTP, NTP) downtime Thursday August 18, 2022 06:30-07:45 am

Various Linux servers will be down for patching and needed reboots to activate changes delivered by some RHEL patches.

login.EECS.Berkeley.EDU is scheduled for downtime from 6:30am to 7am.

The departmental dhcp server is scheduled for downtime from 6:30am to 7am.

cronus one of the departmental DNS and time servers is scheduled for downtime from 6:45am-7:00am.

rhea the other departmental DNS and time server is scheduled for downtime from 7:00am-7:15am.

The departmental authenticating outgoing SMTP server gateway.eecs is scheduled for downtime from 7:30am to 7:45am.

We expect actual downtimes to be less than scheduled.

August Windows Server Patching

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, August 9th, 2022. PRINT, WINTERM and WDS will automatically patch and reboot Wednesday, August 10th, at 3:00 am.

WINTERM may be unavailable till 10:00 am Wednesday, August 10th, depending on additional software updates.

Soda and Cory Halls Network Maintenance, Thu. 7/14 6AM

At 6AM on Thursday, July 14th, we will be performing emergency maintenance in order to address recent network instability. Soda and Cory Hall wired and wireless networks will experience interruptions during this time, and we expect all connectivity will be restored by 7AM. IDSG services in 290 Soda (such as file service) will not be interrupted, but Instructional services in 290 will be interrupted.

BWRC will also be isolated from Campus and the Internet for a period during this maintenance.

Some systems or services such as nfs mounts may need to be restarted after this maintenance. Please contact us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you have any questions.

Update 7/14: This maintenance has been completed. Wired networks have been restored, and wireless networks are coming back online.

Sutardja Dai Hall Network Maintenance, Wed. 7/13 6AM

At 6AM on Wednesday, July 13th, we will be performing emergency maintenance in order to address recent network instability. Sutardja Dai wired and wireless networks will experience interruptions during this time, and we expect all connectivity will be restored by 7AM.

Update 7/13 6:28AM: This maintenance has been completed and most connectivity has been restored. Wi-fi networks in some areas are still coming back online, but we anticipate all connectivity will be restored by start of business.

Firewall Migrations for Private Networks, 6/27 6AM

At 6AM on Monday, June 27, we will be migrating various Private Networks to our new border firewall. After this maintenance, our migrations to the new firewall will be complete.

This will affect all networks using addresses between 169.229.3.0 and 169.229.3.83. There will be a brief interruption to each Private Network as they are migrated.

We encourage network administrators to test their systems on Monday morning after this maintenance is complete, to ensure their traffic is being properly handled by the new firewall.

BWRC Firewall Migration, 6/9 6AM

At 6AM on Thursday, June 9th, we will be migrating BWRC networks to the new border firewall. BWRC’s connectivity to EECS, Campus, and the Internet will be briefly disrupted at this time. This will affect all wired and EECS wireless networks at BWRC.

We encourage system administrators to test their systems on Thursday morning after this maintenance is complete, to ensure their applications and services are being properly handled by the new firewall.

Please contact the BWRC Sysadmins or help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you have any questions.

Update 6/6: Due to a conflict with other work being performed at BWRC, this maintenance has been moved from Tuesday 6/7 to Thursday 6/9. The original post has been edited accordingly.

Update 6/9: This maintenance has been completed. Please contact BWRC Sysadmins or help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you notice issues with the new firewall.

Temporary LDAP authentication failure

We experienced a failure of EECS LDAP authentication, from about 5:50pm to 10:30pm, due to routine patches changing some file permissions for saslauthd. The issue has been corrected, and LDAP authentication is working again.

The problem may have been most noticeable when attempting to login to various EECS web forms (e.g. system registration or user account request forms).
