Updating available WINSWW packages

In an effort to keep the list of software available on WINSWW current, IDSG will be removing some of the packages currently published to the domain
(i.e. they appear in “Add/Remove Programs”) that no longer exist. IDSG plans
to do this on Monday, Oct 10, 2005 in the afternoon.

This procedure will not uninstall any software from any machines, it
will just prevent nonexistent software from being available for future
installation attempts. Packages removed in this manner will be
replaced with current versions shortly (if they haven’t been already).

IMAP server downtime, Oct 11 2005

There will be downtime on Tuesday Oct 11, 2005 from 5PM to 6PM to add new hardware to the IMAP server imap.EECS.Berkeley.EDU.

The server will be rebooted several times during this time.

You will not be able to read mail until the server is stable again which will be at 6PM.

HERMES, PRINT, RIS, and WINSWW Down for Patching

Microsoft will release their patches for the month on Tuesday, Oct
11, 2005. HERMES, PRINT, RIS and WINSWW will be down for patching the
following Wednesday, Oct 12, 2005, from 3:00 – 5:00pm.

EECS Macintosh Server is Now Online

The new Macintosh Server is up and running at macserver.eecs.berkeley.edu. Authentication is via your Windows Domain user name and password. Use Cmd+k to open the “go to server” window and type, smb://macserver.eecs.berkeley.edu. If your host is already in the domain no authentication in needed. If your host in not in the domain you will need to authenticate.

The service so far is a shared folder, macsww. It contains a public folder of software for the Macintosh. I am still working on the Matlab installer, everything else should work.

Please let me know if you have problems, I welcome your emails as Macintosh support is new to EECS and this is a work in progress.

EECS Town Hall Meeting

Hi all,

We are pleased to announced our first EECS Town Hall meeting for this semester (FY05-06). It will be held in Woz Lounge, Oct. 11, from 2 to 4pm.

Since this is our first meeting this fiscal year, there will be a lot of IT related information that we want to share, including upcoming deployments of the EECS IT security plans, various large scale campus activities, and many other new EECS services that are/will be in place throughout the year. We encourage you to attend, and please share the news with others that might be interested.

More detailed agenda will be posted in the IRIS web site when it is available. There will be light refreshments, and please do bring your comments and suggestions with you!

Mac Server

Mac Support In EECS

We are pleased to be offering Mac OSX (10.4) as a supported platform in EECS, effective 10/01/05. Due to limited staffing and resources, comprehensive support for Macs (desktops and laptops) will be limited to Mac OS 10.4 and higher only. The following is an estimated schedule for this deployment. Please direct your feedbacks and comments to me (hpc@eecs), thank you.

IRIS web site FAQ (How-To documents): available 9/30

  • add mac to EECS Windows AD domain;
  • add mac to EECS unix domain;
  • add mac to EECS and airbears wireless networks;
  • access resources from inside/outside of EECS;
  • security measures (firewall, OS);

MacSWW: available 9/30

  • EECS department site licensed software (matlab, mathematica, office 2003, virtual pc, etc.);
  • campus site licensed software (vpn, calendar, ssh, ftp, virus);

Remote installation service: ETA Dec 2005

Security scanning: ETA 2006

Helpdesk support: available 9/30

Windows Print Server Update

Due to the continued networking and hardware problems on PRINT, a new windows print server, PRINT2, is in the process of being built. I expect the server to be on line tomorrow.

To smooth this transition, PRINT2 will immediately begin service for queues that have been experiencing sever outages on PRINT. More announcements will be posted as the transition from PRINT to PRINT2 continues. Thank you for your patience.
