The departmental authenticating outgroup smtp server gateway.eecs will be down for a needed reboot to activate changes delivered by some RHEL patches.

Though the scheduled downtime is 6:40am to 7:10am, we expect actual downtime to be less.

Outgoing stmp service via gateway.eecs will not be available during scheduled maintenance on gateway.eecs beginning Wednesday September 7, 2013 06:30

Though the scheduled downtime is 6:30am to 7am, we expect actual downtime to be less.

A new SSL certificate with different intermediate SSL certificates is being installed.

July 2016 – spam sent out via gateway.eecs

A compromised IRIS account was used to send out spam July 29th through July 31, 2016 via gateway.EECS.Berkeley.EDU

gateway.EECS.Berkeley.EDU was added to at least two different spam blacklists while it was spewing out spam. gateway has been delists\ed and the owner of the compromised IRIS account was contacted.

Please let us know if you encounter any related issues.

Brief service interruption for gateway.eecs, cricket.eecs

At 4:30pm today, we will briefly shutdown gateway.eecs and cricket.eecs, to move them to another rack in the same room.

Downtime should be only 5-10 minutes.

gateway.eecs is used for some outgoing SMTP connections, such as might be configured in Thunderbird or Outlook.

cricket.eecs is used in our network database to display port usage information.

expired SSL certificate on gateway.EECS.Berkeley.EDU

gateway.EECS.Berkeley.EDU was offering an expired SSL certificate for outgoing SMTP service during the Monday October 21 16:59 PDT to Tuesday October 22 06:49 PDT time frame.

We regret the inconvenience.

Though a new SSL certificate was installed on gateway on October 1, 2013, not all the appropriate processes were restarted at that time.

CalMail SMTP Server Not Working

new SSL certificate installed on gateway.eecs

The installed SSL certificate was scheduled to expire 2011/12/31.

A new SSL certificate was installed on the authenticated outgoing smtp server gateway.EECS.Berkeley.EDU. This SSL certificate will expire 10/21/2013

Widespread service disruption due to UPS failure

Last evening about 21:26 there was a power failure in the main EECS server room in Soda Hall. The UPS held up some systems until about 22:00 at which time staff shut the room down completely. Many EECS services were disrupted as a result. The problem was found to be in the UPS which fried the high voltage output terminal block. The terminal block was bypassed and the UPS has been removed from service until further notice. Most EECS computing services have been restored as of 03:15 this morning with the exception of the IRIS web server, which was restored around 10:15am Sunday.

Thanks to the staff who came in early Sunday morning to deal with this issue.
