Network slowness, dropped packets

April 2, 2018 by Lars Rohrbach

Staff are investigating widespread reports of network slowness and dropped packets.

Network traffic solely within EECS networks appears to be fine, but network traffic traveling past the EECS border to campus or beyond is incurring significant packet loss. It is unclear at this time whether the problem exists on the EECS side or the campus side.

We will update this news item with more information as it becomes available.

UPDATE

[2018-04-02 17:37:43 | Lars Rohrbach]

The problem currently appears to be at the campus level, possibly at the campus network border, though we await confirmation from campus network staff.

Network traffic between EECS hosts, between EECS and the campus Data Center, and between EECS and Research network hosts, seems to be unaffected.

UPDATE

[2018-04-02 18:19:56 | Lars Rohrbach]

Campus network staff have acknowledged the issue, and reported: “We are aware of instability in the campus network and are troubleshooting to determine the cause and work toward a resolution.” See also http://ucbsystems.org/

UPDATE

[2018-04-02 20:27:42 | Lars Rohrbach]

Campus has resolved the network issue, reporting: “the campus network instability was caused by a flood of traffic directed at some research devices. We have blackholed that traffic and restored stability to the network.”
