Network disruption

September 27, 2016 by Lars Rohrbach

Network staff are investigating two failed switches. The switch failures are affecting a number of hosts in the department; in particular, communication between hosts on the 128.32.48.0 subnet (165 Cory Hall) and the NIS/DNS servers cronus and rhea.

*Update*: as of 10:28am, communication between the 48 subnet and cronus/rhea was restored.

UPDATE

[2016-09-27 16:35:12 | Derek Calderon]

We encountered several issues, including two separate switch failures and a loss of a redundant link.

Loss of service included: * wired network to approx. 50% of ports in the 3rd/4th floor of Marvell Nanolab in SDH
* wired network support to certain machines in 165 Cory Hall
* DNS service was unavailable or slow on the Cory Hall wired networks
* EECS-Secure experienced some authentication issues

We have replaced one failed device, worked around the other, mitigated the failed link, and have contacted the vendor to replace the two failed devices. The network should be fully functional as of approximately noon today. Please email help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you are still noticing any problems.
