We have arranged for reserve power to be provided to the network and server rooms in 288, 290, and 420A Soda, such that department and research infrastructure and services will remain online and available to users outside Soda Hall.
We recommend powering off all equipment such as desktop computers ahead of time to prevent any issues caused by unexpected power loss. Additionally, any sysadmins hosting equipment in machine rooms other than 288, 290, and 420A will need to power their machines down in advance of the outage.
Should you need access to the building during the outage (for example, you are a sysadmin who would like to take advantage of the downtime to perform deferred maintenance), please email Miles Bianchi (firstname.lastname@example.org) for consideration by the Safety Committee. This access will only be granted for special cases.
We apologize for any and all inconvenience caused by this outage. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Derek (email@example.com) for IT issues or Miles (firstname.lastname@example.org) for facilities or safety issues.

The shutdown has been extended until 1900 (7PM) on May 30th to allow facilities to perform additional preventative maintenance on the Soda Hall electrical systems.

In preparation for the cutover to generator power this morning, one of the electrical crews cut power to our network and server rooms ahead of schedule, at about 5:30am. Our UPS systems provided reserve power, but were not able to keep power up until the generator was put into service. Our network and server rooms lost all power, with key services crashing at about 6:10am.
Generator power was brought online to our server rooms, and services were generally restored as of about 6:45am.
For the evening power cutover, when we move from generator power back to building power, we will preemptively shutdown all key servers to avoid any further crashing. All department computing services (including home and project fileservice) will be unavailable for a little over an hour this evening between 6pm and 8pm.
Monitoring and maintenance will continue throughout the day, and we expect any service interruptions to be minimal until this evening’s outage.

After delays due to Campus Facilities electrical maintenance work, Soda Hall was reopened at about 9:45pm.
Department computing and network services were brought back online, including fileservice from home and project.
We continue to investigate a network issue affecting some servers in Cory Hall on the 48-net, as well as a number of wireless access points in Cory Hall and Soda Hall; updates will be available at Network disruption following the Soda Power Outage.
