Wired network service

Brief network outage in Cory and BWRC, Oct 28, 6:30am

The main Cory router will be down for maintenance on Tuesday October 28, 2008 from 6:30AM to 7AM. This will shutdown all connectivity in Cory Hall and internet access for BWRC. Actual downtime is expected to only be about 10 minutes, maybe less.

Cory Router Problems

The main Cory Hall network router unexpectedly rebooted following a critical error. We’ve received at least one report of connectivity problems in Cory as of 1:15pm. Network staff are currently investigating the problem.

BWRC switch replacement

We have replaced a failing chassis at the core of BWRC data infrastructure. The network services has been restored around 11:40am.

BWRC core switch back on service

Around 1:50pm this afternoon, BWRC core router can not pass the network traffic as the CPU load hit nearly 98%. However, the networks within BWRC remained functional.

SSH attack triggered the spin cycle during that time. This BWRC switch was back on services at 3:00pm.

Router Failure

Just before 4 PM today, a core router management module failed. The unit did try to fail over to the backup but it was not a complete cut over and some services were disrupted. We attempted to reboot the module but that caused a more massive failure in the chassis for less than 1 min. The bad module has been removed and service has been restored. We are continuing to troubleshoot the first problem with the vendor.

Cory Transformer Upgrade

Physical Plant will be shutting off all the power to Cory Hall to switch
transformers on Wednesday night, June 4th from 7pm to 9pm. This will
allow upgrade of our back up transformer located in the basement. The
building will be closed from 6pm until 9pm for this event. Please ensure
your lab equipment and computers are prepared for this event.

Please contact Scott McNally for questions or Mark Davis (642-1468) in
room 253, Cory Hall.

Note that CUSG will be on-site during this time, and will coordinate the shutdown of CUSG-supported servers in Cory Hall, and later will get them back online when the power is restored.

CUSG will attempt to power-off all CUSG-supported Cory Hall workstations (Windows PCs and Linux workstations) starting at 5:30pm. CUSG will power-off all CUSG-supported Cory Hall servers beginning at 5:45pm. Some may be online as late as 6:30pm, as we continue shut-downs remotely. Servers will be brought back online as soon as power is restored.

Soda Hall computer services should continue normally.

Network Outage on 2nd Floor of Soda Hall

A network switch on the second floor of Soda had a hardware failure on May 6th between 4:45pm and 5:25pm. The switch serves the instructional lab and instructional servers. We replaced suspect hardware in order to prevent future failures.

A permanent fix will require us to replace the entire hardware chassis and we will announce future network downtime when we are ready to complete the procedure.

Network Switch Reboot in 165 Cory Machine room

We need to do one last reboot of the switch on the first floor in Cory Hall, which supplies a large number of servers in 165 machine room. This should not be long and no errors are expected. Estimated downtime is 3 to 5 minutes.

Report of Loss of Network Connectivity

We have had a report of several incidents of a loss of network connectivity to UCB (including EECS) from off campus this evening. At the moment, I am unable to seen an issue. A trouble ticket will be opened with IST for this issue.

Planned network outage, March 25, 7-8am

There will be network maintenance at Soda 2nd floor on Tuesday March 25th between 7:00AM and 8:00AM. During this network downtime, both cronus and rhea will be off the network, so departmental NIS and time services will be down. Coeus and Project will be down, so all home directories and project file storage space will be unavailable.

We expect the actual down time to only be several minutes but we are scheduling a larger window for the outage in case we encounter any unexpected problems.

Please make your plans accordingly.
