We are pleased to announce the new version of
login.EECS.Berkeley.EDU, a Linux general login server running
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 7 (RHEL 7).
You can begin using it immediately with the name login2.EECS.Berkeley.EDU, and
as of Thursday August 16, 2018, the name login.EECS.Berkeley.EDU will
refer to the same system.
The ECDSA ssh key fingerprint is
SHA256:v67SnYH5INkysyMKwTF3FVsNaFR5jd4Z+56qdAitH6w
MD5:2b:92:69:db:ca:b2:5c:62:d3:c9:ab:5b:32:6a:72:0b
The RSA ssh key fingerprint for this new server is
MD5:d8:d6:9d:60:9b:3b:75:30:5f:b8:62:f1:cd:7c:75:86
SHA256:mrMVQ0vjrNwNNH0CskYDklv7HT9ApV/gD+orHgV/tV
This new Linux general login server uses ssh keys or
one’s IRIS LDAP (EECS Windows Active Directory)
credentials for authentication.
Any binaries in your home directory or project space
that you used on the previous Solaris 10x86_64 login.eecs
will need to be recompiled to work on this new server.
Like its predecessor, this new login server is a general purpose server. It is not
meant to be used for running cpu-intensive jobs. It is not meant
to provide any remote services besides ssh logins. It is a
resource shared by other users; please respect your colleagues.
login.EECS.Berkeley.EDU will become a DNS nickname for the
new general login server login2.EECS.Berkeley.EDU on
Thursday, August 16, 2018. The old Solaris server can be reached using
the name login-old.EECS.Berkeley.EDU until July 1, 2019, providing that
the hardware and software lasts that long.
Please contact
the IRIS help desk (help@eecs, 395 Cory Mon-Fri 9:30am-5pm,
642-7777) if you have any questions or comments.

Staff are investigating widespread reports of network slowness and dropped packets.
Network traffic solely within EECS networks appears to be fine, but network traffic traveling past the EECS border to campus or beyond is incurring significant packet loss. It is unclear at this time whether the problem exists on the EECS side or the campus side.
We will update this news item with more information as it becomes available.
