Wi-Fi Compatibility Issues with Newer wpa_supplicant Versions, including Ubuntu 22.04

April 29, 2022 by Derek Calderon

We’ve confirmed an issue affecting Linux wireless clients using wpa_supplicant version 2.10, which includes the already-released Ubuntu 22.04. These clients are unable to connect to both eduroam and EECS-Secure due to an incompatibility in TLS negotiation methods.

We are working with our vendor to see if the eduroam and EECS-Secure authentication servers can be updated to comply with the relevant RFC. Some Linux distributions, including Ubuntu 22.04 and Fedora 36, are working on patches to address this issue from the client side.

Until a fix is deployed for your distro or our software, we suggest those affected by this issue employ the fix described in this link:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/279762/how-to-connect-to-wpa2-peap-mschapv2-enterprise-wifi-networks-that-dont-use-a-c/1405397#1405397

Our thanks to Alex Reinking, a member of the EECS community, who first reported this issue and also provided the fix linked above.
This post was updated on May 5th with newer information and to correct some errors.

Announcing Retirement of the EECS-Secure Wireless Network

April 21, 2022 by Derek Calderon

EECS-Secure Broadcast Ceases May 16

On Monday, May 16th, at 7AM we will cease public broadcast of the EECS-Secure wireless network. The network will continue to exist and devices already configured to use it will be able to continue to do so. However, it will not be available as a visible option to new devices which are not currently configured to connect to EECS-Secure. In other words, EECS-Secure will become a hidden SSID.

We recommend users of EECS-Secure begin transitioning to eduroam effective immediately. Information about how to connect to eduroam is available at:
https://technology.berkeley.edu/wi-fi

Please read the full post below for more information.

Soda 3F Wi-Fi Outage, 4/4/22

April 4, 2022 by Derek Calderon

Wi-Fi networks for a large portion of Soda Hall third floor are offline since 7:20 this morning due to a switch failure. Staff are currently in transit to install a replacement.

Update 11:27: Wi-fi service in most areas was restored around 10:35. The remainder was restored at 11:25. Please contact help@eecs.berkeley.edu if you notice any ongoing issues.

Firewall Migrations for IRIS NetApps and Instructional Servers, 3/21 6AM

March 17, 2022 by Derek Calderon

At 6AM on Monday, March 21, we will be migrating the following networks to our new border firewall:

169.229.3.96/27 (Instructional Support Group servers)
169.229.3.128/26 (IRIS NetApp file servers, including home and project shares)

There will be a brief interruption to these networks as they are migrated. This will affect all home, project, and other file storage provided by the IRIS NetApps. After the migration, we encourage system administrators to test that connections to the NetApps are behaving as expected. Some file service clients may need to be rebooted or have their nfs service restarted.

Please contact us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu with any questions or concerns.

Firewall Migrations for Soda and Cory Server Networks, 3/14 6AM

March 10, 2022 by Derek Calderon

At 6AM on Monday, March 14, we will be migrating these wired networks to our new border firewall:

128.32.244.0/25 (165 Cory restricted network)
128.32.244.128/25 (290 Soda restricted network)
128.32.128.0/24 (290 Soda virtual machines)

There will be a brief interruption to these networks as they are migrated. This will also affect various IRIS services such as hosted web sites and winterm. After the migration, we encourage system administrators to test that traffic across the firewall is behaving as expected.

Please contact us at help@eecs.berkeley.edu with any questions or concerns.

Jacobs and HMMB Firewall Migrations, 3/7 6AM

March 1, 2022 by Derek Calderon

At 6AM on Monday, March 7, we will be migrating these wired networks to our new border firewall:

169.229.62.0/24 (Jacobs Hall)
169.229.63.0/25 (BiD Lab in HMMB)

There will be a brief interruption to these networks as they are migrated. After the migration, we encourage system administrators to test that traffic across the firewall is behaving as expected.

EECS Network Maintenance, 2/25 6AM

February 24, 2022 by Derek Calderon

Tomorrow morning, 2/25 at 6AM, we will be rebooting the Soda Hall core router in order to apply a configuration change which will resolve an issue currently affecting a small portion of network traffic. As a result, we expect most EECS network paths will be unavailable for up to 15 minutes beginning at 6AM. Some systems or services (e.g. nfs) may have connectivity issues and may need to be restarted or rebooted after this maintenance.

Issues with RFC1918 Networks

February 22, 2022 by Derek Calderon

There is currently no DHCP or DNS service on the RFC1918 networks (10.x.x.x) as a result of this morning’s maintenance. This is primarily affecting printers in Soda, Cory and Sutardja Dai Halls. We are working on a fix and plan to deploy it this evening.

Cory 2F Network Outage, 2/2/22

February 22, 2022 by Derek Calderon

Cory Hall 2nd Floor networks went offline this afternoon, 2/22, at 12:51PM due to a malfunctioning switch. The switch was restored remotely and wired networking returned at 1:13PM. Wireless networking has not yet fully recovered and we are working on this.

Firewall Migrations for Many Networks, 2/22 6AM

February 15, 2022 by Derek Calderon

At 6AM on Tuesday, February 22 at 6AM, we will be migrating a large number of networks to our new border firewall. This will affect the majority of wired networks in Soda, Cory, and Sutardja Dai Halls. EECS-Secure and EECS-PSK in all locations except BWRC will also be affected.

There will be a brief interruption to each of these networks as they are migrated. In addition, the ipv6 subnets used by EECS-Secure and EECS-PSK clients will change. You can read the full post below for details.

We encourage system administrators to test their systems on Tuesday morning after this maintenance is complete, to ensure their applications are being properly handled by the new firewall.
