PHP upgrade on apps.eecs, Wednesday Sep 3

September 3, 2014 by Rob McNicholas

We have had numerous requests to upgrade PHP on apps.eecs to a newer version. Version 5.3 is available for this operating system and, barring any complaints, will be installed Wednesday, September 3rd beginning at 5pm. The server will be briefly restarted between 5pm and 6pm to complete the installation. This will affect the web hosts:

  • apps.eecs.berkeley.edu
  • bjc.berkeley.edu
  • bsim.eecs.berkeley.edu
  • csillustrated.berkeley.edu
  • leed.eecs.berkeley.edu
  • rt.eecs.berkeley.edu
  • snap.berkeley.edu
  • wiki.eecs.berkeley.edu
  • www-device.eecs.berkeley.edu

If you manage content on any of these hosts, please check your scripts for compatibility with PHP 5.3. The following references may be helpful

UPDATE

[2014-09-03 18:07:11 | Rob McNicholas]

Most hosted sites were back in service by 5:30pm, but per-user scripting was not working properly until around 6pm. Upgrading Apache caused some file permissions to be reset to defaults, which do not work in our environment. The suexec executable had to be recompiled and installed by hand to enable suexec functionality again.

Among other basic operating system upgrades, PHP has been upgraded to 5.3.29, Apache to version 2.2.3, and perl to version 5.8.8.
