EECS Mailing List Service down

October 2, 2013 by IRIS Staff

The web interface to the EECS Mailliist service went down at around 4:04AM. Attempts to restart it uncovered other problems which staff are now investigating.

The list server is back in service. Staff are investigating what went wrong; this article will be update when more details emerge.

UPDATE

[2013-10-02 09:25:15 | Robert McNicholas]

The cause of last night’s mailing list error has been found and fixed.

On Sunday, Sep 29th we migrated the database for lists.eecs to a new server. This server had a different configuration for its maximum number of open files, and we reached that number last night. This caused the database to stop working.

The database has been reconfigured to increase this value which should prevent this problem from occurring again.
