The Instructional and Research Information Systems (IRIS) organization in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) is responsible for the design, planning, deployment, and maintenance of all IT architecture, infrastructure, security, applications, and operational computing and networking for research, instructional, and administrative services within EECS Department. It serves these same roles for the Engineering Research Support Organization (ERSO), and the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society (CITRIS) as well as other affiliated departments and groups within the College of Engineering (CoE) and the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS). IRIS is comprised of an Instructional Support Group (ISG), a Computer User Support Group (CUSG), and an Infrastructure Development Support Group (IDSG).
This position is a member of the Infrastructure Development Support Group (IDSG). IDSG provides infrastructure support for the IT needs of the IRIS community. This position works with IDSG, assisting with system installation and administration, development and integration of applications and services to support our community, as well as providing end-user support.
35% Technology service integration:
- Manages departmental Google SPA (role) accounts, and department domain aliases.
- Advise on related email routing between campus and department resources.
- Assists with server and network hardware installation and configuration.
- Identifies, evaluates and develops limited-to-moderately-complex systems, processes and procedures. Develops basic user interface designs. Documents software and processes.
- Creates reports and training documents.
- Works on basic-to-moderately-complex databases with appropriately normalized data structures using intermediate level database design and programming techniques such as views, triggers and stored procedures. Works on database-related issues and projects of diverse scope taking in business practice and technical considerations, applying defined IT procedures and practices to database projects.
25% System administration: user-facing:
- Creates and Manages IRIS user accounts (in Active Directory, LDAP, and the EECS roster database), used by the EECS department.
- Processes network device registrations and updates, following IDSG procedures for updating DHCP configuration and DNS records.
- Creates and maintains Google groups (bConnected lists) and Google domain aliases, for department-related domains.
25% End user technical support:
- Assists Helpdesk with providing end user technical support, primarily through our ticketing system.
- Creates and maintains online documentation and service announcements.
15% System administration: internal:
- Assists with VMware virtual machine creation and management, for infrastructure use or testing.
- Designs, develops, modifies, debugs and evaluates moderately complex software and scripts. Designs and applies basic data sources. Employs source code control techniques. Tests software to ensure proper operation and conformance to test plans.
- General knowledge of several areas of IT.
- Experience with Windows and Windows Server.
- Experience with Linux (installation and usage).
- Programming experience (for business process improvements, and for web development).
- Experience with version control (SCCS, RCS, subversion, git).
- Demonstrated ability to install software and troubleshoot and repair moderately complex.
- Basic knowledge of incident response procedures. Demonstrated ability to follow software.
- Demonstrated experience with database administration.
- Ability to write technical documentation in a clear and concise manner.
- Demonstrated knowledge of computer security tools, best practices and policies.
- Demonstrated skills applying security controls to computer software and hardware.
- Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Demonstrates problem-solving skills.
- Able to learn effectively and meet deadlines.
- Demonstrated testing and test planning skills.
- Demonstrated understanding of how system management actions affect users and dependent / related functions.
