Thunderbird

Where can I get the software?

To download Thunderbird, please go to Mozilla’s Thunderbird Product Page.

We also keep Thunderbird installed and updated on winterm.eecs (see our EECS Login Servers page).

How to set up Thunderbird

Please see the following Mozilla article on Thunderbird with Gmail:
https://support.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/kb/thunderbird-and-gmail

If starting up and configuring Thunderbird with an @eecs.berkeley.edu email address, it should auto-discover appropriate settings for you.

Using EECS LDAP for address auto-completion

Quick settings summary:

  • Hostname: ldap.eecs.berkeley.edu
  • Base DN:ou=people,o=eecs.berkeley.edu,dc=eecs,dc=berkeley,dc=edu
  • Port: 389 (no SSL)
  • Bind DN: (blank)

Configuring Thunderbird to use a Directory Server allows you to take advantage of auto-completion of email addresses for others with IRIS accounts. This uses an anonymous bind to the EECS LDAP server.

The EECS LDAP servers restrict off-campus access, so to use this auto-completion while off campus, you will need to use the Campus VPN Service.

  1. Open your Settings.
  2. Select Composition, and then scroll to Addressing.
  3. Check “Directory Server” and click on Edit Directories…
  4. In the list of LDAP Directory Servers that comes up, click Add to create a new entry.
  5. Enter the following server properties as shown:
    • Name: EECS
    • Hostname: ldap.eecs.berkeley.edu
    • Base DN:ou=people,o=eecs.berkeley.edu,dc=eecs,dc=berkeley,dc=edu
    • Port: 389 (no SSL)
    • Bind DN: (blank)
  6. Click OK twice to close, and make sure your EECS Directory Server is selected as your Directory Server settings before closing the Settings window.
