Quick update for 2014: For this calendar year, please request Matlab licenses from the Campus Software Central website, using the link under the section, “College of Engineering”. You will receive an activation key to use when installing Matlab.
The instructions below still apply if you have an older version of Matlab, pointing to the EECS Matlab license server (which does not support R2013b or newer licenses).
User Licensing Information
The Matlab software used in the department is licensed on a per-user basis. This means, if the group you are working with would like you to use Matlab then they must have a license for you to do so. This is true for each member of the group using Matlab. If your group has no available licenses for you to use, then there are two ways to go about making one available:
- The person in charge of the group can authorize to have a previous user’s license transferred to you.
- The person in charge of the group can authorize the purchase of an additional license for your use.
To have a license transferred, do the following:
- E-mail help@eecs for a list of the current members of your matlab group.
- Once you’ve found your group, make sure that the username of the person who’s license you are going to be replacing is on the list.
- Have the person in charge of your group send an email to help@eecs containing the following information:
- Who they are.
- What group they’re with.
- Old username to be replaced.
- New username to replace the old one.
To purchase a new license, have the person in charge of your group send an email to help@eecs containing the following information:
- Who they are.
- What group they’re with.
- How many licenses they want.
- Which usernames to add the licenses to (if any).
- An account string to charge the licenses to.
History of EECS Matlab Pool Proposals
Using the Right Account Name
Note that EECS Matlab licensing is keyed on your EECS username (case-sensitive). You must run Matlab under an account with the same username. This is easiest on Windows and MacOS if you join the EECS domain, and login with your EECS account. If you use a local account, you may need to rename it to match your EECS username, or you can create a new local account with the proper username.
CHANGING A LOCAL WINDOWS ACCOUNT NAME
Your Windows username (not the “Full Name”) must match your licensed EECS username. You can check your username at a Command prompt with echo %USERNAME%
. Depending on your version of Windows, you may be able to change a local username by right-clicking Computer and selecting Manage; right-clicking the account under Local Users and Groups may give you the option to Rename.
CHANGING A LOCAL MAC OS ACCOUNT NAME
Your Mac “shortname” (not the “User Name”) must match your licensed EECS username. Apple’s instructions for changing your local account’s shortname are available in this Apple knowledgebase article.
GETTING HELP WITH CHANGING A LOCAL ACCOUNT NAME
If you would like assistance with changing your local account name to match your EECS username, please consider hiring CUSG.
Toolbox License Information
Matlab toolboxes are under a similar licensing scheme as Matlab itself. For your group to have access to a particular toolbox you must purchase a license for the group. Notice, not everyone in the group needs an individual license, a single license for the group is sufficient. Thus to add the functionality of a particular toolbox, have the person in charge of the group send an email to help@eecs containing the following information:
- Who they are.
- What group they’re with.
- Which toolbox they want.
- An account string to charge the license to.
Also, any users subsequently added to the group will automatically have access to any toolboxes the group has licenses for.

Please note that the concurrent license is the price that applies and not the group license price.
