Why use the VPN? What is it for?
The Campus VPN Service allows CalNet ID authenticated users to connect to the UC Berkeley network from outside of campus, as if they were on campus and encrypts the information sent to the network.
Previously, IST hosted a separate instance which allwed access using EECS usernames and passwords. The EECS VPN service ended on August 12, 2009.
You may want to use a VPN connection if:
- You need access to services restricted to the campus network.
- You use network protocols like NetBIOS to connect to a host or service on campus (since some ports are blocked at the campus border for security reasons).
- You need to mount a Windows disk share from an on-campus computer on your home computer.
