Home Directory Storage

Scheduled Storage Outage, Fri. 3/11/16 10PM

March 11, 2016 by Derek Calderon

This Friday at 10PM we will be doing a software upgrade on the switch which provides connectivity for the EECS storage infrastructure. This upgrade is to address an issue with in-band management of the switch.

All storage services (home directories, project storage, etc.) will be briefly unavailable during the upgrade. Past experience suggests that this downtime will only last approximately five minutes. We strongly recommend that you save and close all open files in home and project spaces before 10PM on Friday. Machines with permanent NFS mounts may need to be rebooted after the maintenance is complete.

Please contact help@eecs.berkeley.edu with any questions or concerns.

Continuing Home Directory Migration

January 27, 2016 by Lars Rohrbach

As
previously announced
, we are in process of migrating our central file storage
system to a new cluster of Network Appliance hardware. We recently completed the
first
batch of migrations
.

We are planning to migrate additional home directories
according to the following schedule:

Start time
Wed Jan 27 7pm Usernames a-h
Thu Jan 28 7pm Usernames i-o
Fri Jan 29 7pm Usernames p-z

You may view the list of accounts targeted for this migration here:
List of homes to migrate

We expect each night’s migration to be completed by 7am the next morning.
Home directories targeted for a given evening will become unavailable at 7pm, as
automount maps are updated. When your home directory migration is completed,
you will be sent an automated email telling you so, and it will be immediately
available for use.

If you require postponement of your home directory migration, please let us know
as soon as possible at help@eecs.
We’ll do our best to accommodate you,
and schedule an alternate time for migration.

—–

(The following is reproduced from the previous announcement.)

If you manually mount your home directory, please read on for changes.
If you have questions about some of the technical details,
please contact your system administrator(s), or contact help@eecs.

1) NFS exports will change. AMD/automaps will be updated accordingly.
Note that this implies a re-mount.

usernames Old New
a-h home:/vol/home/eecs/<user> home10:/home10/<user>
i-q home:/vol/home/eecs/<user> home20:/home20/<user>
r-z home:/vol/home/eecs/<user> home30:/home30/<user>

2) CIFS/Windows access will change similarly. Active Directory will be updated
accordingly, so that corresponding H: drives will be mounted from the new
location.

usernames Old New
a-h \\home\<user> \\home10\<user>
i-q \\home\<user> \\home20\<user>
r-z \\home\<user> \\home30\<user>

Migration of Home Directories — First Batch

January 22, 2016 by Lars Rohrbach

As
previously announced
, we are in process of migrating our central file storage
system to a new cluster of Network Appliance hardware.

We have identified 703 home directories on home.eecs.berkeley.edu that are
not under immediate, active use, and will be migrating them to the new file
storage beginning late tonight, January 22, 2016. Active use was assessed using
timestamps of top level home directory, last Active Directory login, last CIFS access,
NFS mounts and netstat output. We anticipate that most of the migrations
in this first batch will take just a few minutes, and that the whole first batch
will be complete before Monday.

You may view the list of home directories that are part of this first-batch migration here:
List of home directories to migrate

During the migration, access to the old location will be disabled; you will
be able to access the new location immediately, as files are copied over.

Many users may never notice a difference. If you manually mount your
home directory, please read on for changes.
If you have questions about some of the technical details,
please contact your system administrator(s), or contact help@eecs.

1) NFS exports will change. AMD/automaps will be updated accordingly.
Note that this implies a re-mount.

i-q home:/vol/home/eecs/<user> home20:/home20/<user>
r-z home:/vol/home/eecs/<user> home30:/home30/<user>

2) CIFS/Windows access will change similarly. Active Directory will be updated
accordingly, so that corresponding H: drives will be mounted from the new
location.

i-q \\home\<user> \\home20\<user>
r-z \\home\<user> \\home30\<user>

We plan to schedule the migration of the remaining home directories on home.eecs
in the coming week. Please stay tuned for more information.

NetApp filer upgrade on December 1

December 1, 2015 by Lars Rohrbach

As part of our preparation for migration to new NetApp file storage hardware, we will be upgrading the OS on our existing Network Appliance file servers at 5pm Tuesday, December 1.

The OS will be upgraded from Data ONTAP version 8.1.2 to 8.2.4. Upgrade will be performed for project.eecs and home.eecs first, and then for cluster.eecs and inst-fs.eecs.

No general service interruption is expected, as our servers are configured in High-Availability pairs. Windows/SMB/CIFS users may experience a hiccup, if they have an active file transfer at the time of the upgrade; such a file transfer would terminate and need to be restarted.

Work is expected to be complete by 6:30pm.

Network cable switchover and disk upgrades for IRIS file servers on June 4th at 3pm

June 4, 2013 by IRIS Staff

On 3:00pm, Tuesday, June 4th, 2013, the network cables for cluster.eecs and inst-fs.eecs will be replaced in an effort to create more easily managed infrastructure. In addition, disk upgrades will take place on all department filers to increase available space. Minimal interruption of service is anticipated. NFS and CIFS mounts should reconnect automatically, although some windows mounts may need to be re-mounted. Maintenance may extend as long as 5pm, though system interruption should be a very short part of this window.

home.eecs short disruption of service at about 1pm today

February 26, 2013 by IRIS Staff

home.eecs had a short disruption of service during an unplanned failover to its partner filer at about 1:00 pm today. Service has been restored and most home directory accesses should have recovered gracefully from the disruption. Windows mounts may require a re-connection.
